Pushkin Park

Participatory urban planning for public space

Working together with Taller Participativo Barrial(Participatory Neighborhood Workshop, a volunteer collective of architects, urban planners, and social scientists), we carried out a participatory study with the goal of producing a detailed plan for redesigning and renovating Alexander Pushkin Park, an important but long-neglected public space in the rapidly-gentrifying Roma Norte neighborhood. We carried out vision-building workshops with neighborhood residents, mapped the actors and activities, traced patterns of movement and use within the space, and surveyed a broad range of daily users. The data we collected became the basis for a detailed diagnostic of the problems and possibilities of the space, which we then used to generate a series of principles and proposed actions for transforming the park. The studio was presented to city authorities tasked with remodeling the park.
